Haiti Relief T-shirt Drive Posted on March 18th, 2010 by

Sophomore Anna Swenson and Junior Lyntrell Wilson load up the van with t-shirt donations.

On Wednesday, March 17th, students from the Changing the World J term class and the Servant Leadership Program loaded sixteen boxes full of t-shirt donations to be transported to the Friends of the Orphans office in St. Paul. From there, the t-shirts will be shipped to the Our Little Brothers and Sisters Orphanage in Haiti as a relief effort.

When the earthquake hit Haiti this January, the students of the Changing the World class wanted to help in a way that was feasible for college students. The class decided to collect gently used t-shirts, as many college students have an excess of shirts from all sorts of organizations, events and groups. “We knew that it would be a great way to engage other students,” states first-year Claire Curran.

Turns out they were right! Curran goes on to state, “We had a tremendous response, and received huge shopping bags full of t-shirts. Some students even contacted their high schools and home churches and brought donations. It just shows how committed Gustavus students are to responding to the needs we see in the world.”
